In a sense, you could think of your portfolio as a representation of you. When people look at it, it should tell the person three things, "this is what i like to do, these are my skills," and " this is how professional I am." Essentially showing who you are as a creative individual, out of the many other creative individuals in the world.
When making a portfolio for whatever it is that you're trying to pursue, it is important that it shows your interest and the things that you like, or else it wouldn't be yours in the first place. This should let the person know that you actually enjoy making or doing the things that are in the portfolio and that, if they were to be offered a career that involves doing the things that are inside, then that the person would jump at that chance and not let go of it. The work that is made to be put in the portfolio also has to show what skills you have in that area, for instance, you would see a lot more 3D character modeling rather than animation if that person were better at 3D modeling. The work basically has to tell the person that you have been educated in that area of work, whether being taught yourself or by another person. Professionalism would be the most important factor for a great portfolio. This should includes you being organized, having work related to your passion and you're trying to impress someone. This is very important when trying to make a great portfolio so spending the extra time to make sure everything is correct and in order is recommend. As for me, the portfolio i have at the moment doesn't reflect anything that i have said in this blog post, but after studying the importance that a portfolio will have when you aspire to get a job, especially in the game industry, I now have a idea of how essential it is when putting things in a portfolio and how it shows me as a person off to the many people that may happen to visit it. I will keep my first year projects only tro show as a time stamp and how I've grown over the years and when adding new things, I will have to show my best work when it comes to filling this website with content.
